Yup...even Porsche puts rev limiters in their machines. I think most every manufacturer does unless it is a true race car.

I think they started putting them in after a frivolus lawsuit was won a while back.

Many true race cars have limiters too...that's likely where the technology was first developed...

Since I cant push it right now (darn break in), I'm wondering if you can get to 60 mph in 2nd gear, or whether a shift is needed. I could only get to 52ish in my Infiniti G35 in 2nd gear.
Here you are - calculated max speed in mph in each gear @ 6500 rpm for a 550i manual (using European std tyres 225/50 R 17; other BMW OEM wheels/tyre combos should not change much)

I: 42
II: 71
III: 108
IV: 143
(V: 171) limiter @ 155
(VI: 196) limited @ 155 + engine power

Formula 1 cars have dynamic limiters, with limits chosen by the driver or overridden by the pits via active telemetry.

That's funny! If we could figure out how to pull it off, I'm game. I'll only settle if we all get to trade our cars in for M5's...

Holy SH*T. I hadnt realized that each of the gears had so much left if them when I was shifting at 4k.

This just got more interesting....
