My Ride: Current - 330 Sport Topaz Blue, Grey Leather, HK HIFI...lost interest!!
Waiting for - 535d Sport, Silver Grey, Foldy Mirrors, 172 19",Logic7,Pro Radio,Through load,Heated Front Seats,High Gloss shadowline,Black Maple,Headlight wash,Sun Protection Glass.
I wish it was an option not to have them, they seem a bit on the weak side, and I never drink in the car. However for those who need a large Mocha or pint of John Smiths on route to work then fill ya boots....and by look of the cup holders you probably will

Don't you laugh now? . I didn't order my car with cupholders (don't ask). Are they possible to retrofit? Is that a big deal? I realize from other posts that they aren't perfect for the task of securely holding a cup? , but now when relizing lack of good spots to put a cup they might not be such a bad idea. What kind of creepy cups do fit in these holders?

Unfortunately, retrofit surely isn't free if even possible.
But don't worry they are useful but far from perfect. Standard metallic cans are OK but 50cl plastic bottles only stay in the cupholder on highways. Don't try them on funny mountain drives.

My Ride: E61 525iA Build 2004/08. "Safirschwartz Metallic". Navi Pro, Adaptive Headlights, Bi-Xenon, Panorama Sunroof etc... CIP 18.00.01 (No noticed bug)
No, they were not free! That's different in different markets. To be honest - what I did was to forget to tick one of those boxes in the order chart... Well, I'll will use an austronats drink bag and a hose when I need something . Or I'll do like that lady that got a cup of coffee in McDonalds and put the cup between the legs - and got 2:nd degree burn...

BMW must have realized this because in the new E90 the cup holders seem to be twice as thick...they feel more sturdy than the E60's. They are the same in-dash design.
