Need to replace the valve gasket on my '05 545, and one dealer wants a bit over $1200 to do it. What's a good price, and should I take this to my indie to replace?

Its time consuming and if your indie can do it and has done it before for cheaper let him do it. If he has never done one before, well... drop it off at my place and let me do it. Also is this for one gasket or both? is this for the valve cover and front timing cover or just the one valve cover gasket?

And lastly don't be surprised if you have other leaks too as it is very common for them to pop up about at the same time.

+1 Indy all the way. You might want to replace both while they have the thing open...

I would go with the Indy shop if they know what they are doing and get the other replaced also. It will be cheaper.

Thanks for the replies. I do not know what side they were referring to or if is was both, but it just showed up and it leaves a small puddle about 3-4 inches in dia. on my garage floor over night after driving 10 miles on the freeway.

I have an indie right across from my work who replaced the valve cover gasket on my 325 a few years back, so I will get a quote from them first.

But in case I do not go with them, where are you located in OC?

Yes, sorry I didn't include your previous quote. I used to be stationed at the MCAS there back in the early 80's, so I know the area. What's your price for changing one/both gaskets?

If you're able do it yourself and do both of them. I can't imagine the gasket being more than $50 or so. I did an e90 valve cover gasket this week and it was amazing how I had to take apart most of the car just to remove the valve cover. wow what a job....glad I had all the correct tools too.
