Hey guys I have a 04' 525i. Unlike some of you, I have a good ol fashioned key.. ...Anyways, The range is no longer what it used to be. I have to be within 5 ft or so to open my car. Has anyone had that problem before? It's not my key because all 3 of mine do it. I'm guessing it has something to do with the sensor? Any feedback would be appreciated, thx guys...

It could be the antenna amplifier that needs to be replaced. Had it happen to me not too long ago. Once replaced, it works far better than before. If I recall it was only about $100 USD to replace.. Hope this helps.

You need a new battery for the key remote, I'm pretty sure it charges when you put it in the ignition... But as well all know, rechargeable batteries slowly dry up, and no longer hold a strong charge anymore. Worst case scenario you can't replace the battery, and need a new key fob which is like 150.

And that's a very good/valid point!

In my situation, I tried both keys and the result was the same.... had to be about 5 ft from the car to make it work.

Good points, all. This is a fairly common issue.

I am probably dating myself, but I remember when one had to actually put the key in the door to unlock the car, much less be 5' away! LOL
