Occasionally I miss having a manual, but 90% of the time I'm glad I have the autobox.

, let's give our fellow member the benefit of the doubt as he's still a "newbie", so we don't know his personality just yet and vice versa...
Ahh - common sense. When I decided to unload my 325 vert and go for a 5 series, everyone said "why?"... I said, "I want a fat old man's car". So when I said that, it was jokingly, and with some amount of affection towards what I new I wanted. I was characterizing the car as slightly more comfy and sedate. Which it is compared to my 325.

You are also correct in that you do not know my personality. However, based upon response to the remark I made I've already gleaned some insight into personalities here.

I had a step in my 323, a 6 spd in my Audi, an auto in my Volvo and now a 6spd in my 545. I love having a manual again, but I do very little stop and go traffic. When I had my Audi, I did a lot of rush hour freeway driving, and it sucked. Now, I don't have any such traffic, and the 6 spd is great to have. The only issues I have are that my clutch creaks and the dealer cannot fix it (after replacing the entire clutch), and I do not have the CDV deleted, and so the clutch is somewhat nonlinear and more difficult to finesse smoothly without riding the clutch.

Hello Barry

We can only gather what you write here on the board. We are not your therapists who would analyse your itty bitty witty humor and know "oh thats just Barry being a Barry".

We all love our cars here. I am sure you do too.

Wow. How feminine of you, Barry.

I've done the manual to auto to manual thing. Each time I had an auto, I longed for a manual. It's not a "vice-versa" situation with the manual. Yeah, an auto is nice for those days when you've had a rough time at the office and just want to relax all the way home, but those days are few and far between. And a manual is much more fun. Back when I had just an auto (and the "Sunday drive" was an economically viable pastime), my weekend, backroad drive was not nearly as fun. I would wish I had a manual. Sure, I could throw it into the semi-manual mode, but it simply was not the same. Not to mention there weren't enough gears. Backroads (and city streets) come alive with a manual!

Agree - from a performance standpoint, manual 100%, Steptronic doesn't come close. My 5 isn't a track car, and wife isn't manual friendly. Thus, I can't see a reason to have a manual in my 5. ANY car that is doing track time, M-U-S-T have a manual. Bottom line is it is the street, thus I don't mind the compromise even a little.

The others that are having a problem with my sense of humor, I'd say you need to breathe... they are cars... everything will be fine.

YMMV,
Barry

I love my manual 2006 530i. You won't be sorry.

The way I see it, there are a few classic BMW traits, and the car you're considering as all of them.

1) Inline 6
2) Rear drive
3) manual transmission

I have a 2006 530xi with 6 sp manual. It is great. I didn't really consider an automatic. My wife and daughter aren't very keen on driving it, even though they know how. Even in Washington traffic, I would order the manual again.

Whatever. E38 740i OEM Sport...
I love the 7 just as much as my fiver, if not more, considering that one is newer than my 5.

Here it is...

Manual swap would be nice, but that's what the 928s are for I guess... ;P

Black '88 928 S4
