I had 4 TCU Units installed before they got it right. Thats why you should check your location through BMW Assist every so offten so you know its working. Thanks JMK. Good luck

Yesterday I was taking my car in to get a rattle sorted ( thought it was rear door squeek or rear seat but it was a loose panel in the boot - trunk ) and the SOS malfunction light came on. I have been told that the TCU needs replacing but there are none in the uk so I will have to wait until one can be got from Germany.

Anyone know what software has to be reloaded ? so I know what questions to ask when the TCU is fitted.

I am on my third TCU, and have totally lost faith in the system. Prior to the last unit, my I-Drive would display the signal strength of the unit, but since the last unit was installed the signal strength no longer appears. I have tried in vain to get someone to tell if the signal strength should appear. So I did not renew the BMW Assist Service. I am waiting until someone calls me and then I will explain. I tried to get help from BMW customer service, but they told me that I had to go to the dealer, he did not know the answer.

When I lost the Assist on the previous two TCU's, I did not receive any credit for the time lost.

The last TCU was replaced two weeks prior to the SIB's issuance, so I did not get the full tank of gas.

C'est la vie!

I just checked with BMW, my 2004 545i - built Sept. 2003 - is not included in the recall. My .02 cents

Sorry to hear that. They gave me an additional 6 months free. Maybe 4 is the lucky number.
cheers

I brought my car in because I periodicaly was getting a message
stating SOS Malfunction. According to my service advisor they did not change the TCU, only reprogrammed it. I let my BMW Assist lapse after the first year, my dealer knew about this and now with the new programming have removed all mention of BMW Assist from I-Drive.

A couple of positive things, the lawyer screen now goes off by itself after a few seconds, An awfull ringing noise is now emitted from the car when I receive an incoming call where privously only my Cell phone rang and best of all the voice quality of my bluetooth is much improved and I do not get as many complaints from people that tell me I sound like I am underwater.

Thanks guys

I have to ask my dealer, but I'm pretty sure this is a BMW NA thing.

My 2004 525i was built in March 2004. That was the first month that bluetooth was able to be added to the car with just a software update. It must have used a different TCU, which is probably the one being recalled.
