My April 2004 build 525i has never had the Service notification feature work. Not once. And the dealer can't explain it. Seems like the TCU could be the culprit.

I got the recall notice yesterday and if I understand it correctly, my BMW assist emergency notification in the event of a crash is probably not functioning. Since I've been paying for BMW Assist primarily to have this feature, I think I should get the next two years free.
Oouucchhh,,, you've been paying BMW assist for the last two years,,, your service notification feature has never worked and you've just received the recall leter... dang, you should really get on their as... and make it up for you.

BTW, my 03/04 service notification worked while I had BMW assist and while I lived in the same city where I purchased the car (Not sure if these two events were related). The BMW assist operator has told me that it should work but that they won't guarantee that it will unless I sign up again.

Mine is also a MY04 525i build date 03/04 in the US. No NAV. I've been told several times by dealer that MP3 retrofit is not possible and that iPod interface with Idrive is not possible. Auxiliary input was suggested.

Regarding the BMW iPod interface for MOST Bus Vehicles, I found the following compatibility chart:
5 series E60/E61
w/o nav 03/05 on
with nav 09/05 on

For MP3, see the compatibility chart attached.
Hopefully somebody will correct me and tell me that it is possible to have either one on production date 03/04 with M-ASK unit

I don't know if you have already seen this info I posted on the ipod interface for the 2004 model.

The MP3 specific SIB has been updated to reflect that MP3 IS AVAILABLE from SOP (Start of Production).

Here

SI B65 30 05
Sound System, Cruise, Alarms, Monitors March 2006
Technical Service

This Service Information bulletin supersedes S.I. B65 30 05 dated January 2006.

designates changes to this revision

SUBJECT
CCC: MP3 CD Playback Not Available

MODEL
E60, E61 (5 Series) with SA 609 CCC-Navigation from SOP to 9/29/05 vehicle production

E63, E64 (6 Series) from SOP to 9/29/05 vehicle production

E90, E91 (3 Series) with SA 609 CCC-Navigation vehicles produced up to 9/29/05

SITUATION
The MP3 option is not available in the audio menu. When an MP3 CD is used, it is not recognized as a valid CD.

CAUSE
The stability of earlier CCC (Car Communication Computer) software did not allow for proper MP3 functionality.

PROCEDURE

On a customer complaint basis only, retrofit MP3 functionality using Progman V20.00 or higher.

Refer to the SI B09 05 01 Coding, Individualization, Programming (CIP), for the "Retrofit" procedure.

Select "MP3" from the retrofit list and follow the on screen instructions for retrofitting MP3 capability.

The service code "KMP3" will be added to the end of the vehicle order as displayed in the Measures Plan.

After the procedure is complete, turn the ignition off and wait 5 minutes or until the driver's switch block LED goes out. Check the functionality of the system.

WARRANTY INFORMATION
Covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty.

Note: The following explanations will spell out the correct use of the work times.

Main Work:
Use this labor operation number when the only repair performed is the listed warranty repair.

OR

+Associated Work:
Use this labor operation number when other repairs or services are performed along with the listed warranty repair.
Under no circumstances should both labor operation numbers be claimed. Attempts to claim both times will result in an unnecessary delay in claim processing and payment.

Thanks cobradav but I think this only applies to vehicles with CCC. I have no NAV, so no CCC, only M-ASK unit. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

So sorry for not paying attention. You are right, M-ASK is not retrofitable for MP3. M-ASK equipped e60s come MP3 ready from MY06 on, but cannot retrofit older models. Sorry again, for not paying attention to the configurations of those asking the question(s).

I am on my third TCU, and have totally lost faith in the system. Prior to the last unit, my I-Drive would display the signal strength of the unit, but since the last unit was installed the signal strength no longer appears. I have tried in vain to get someone to tell if the signal strength should appear. So I did not renew the BMW Assist Service. I am waiting until someone calls me and then I will explain. I tried to get help from BMW customer service, but they told me that I had to go to the dealer, he did not know the answer.

When I lost the Assist on the previous two TCU's, I did not receive any credit for the time lost.

The last TCU was replaced two weeks prior to the SIB's issuance, so I did not get the full tank of gas.

C'est la vie!
I'm with BMW of North America, LLC. I've passed this message on to a BMW NA Customer Relations Representative who will be in touch with you soon.

Guys/Gals, they (BMW) do read this forum. I was contacted today about this post, and it was confirmed that the signal strength indication was removed due to a customer complaint. Apparently the customer could not tell the difference between the bluetooth signal and the BMW Assist signal. I am sure that it wasn't one of our members!

I just received a recall letter from BMW. I have a 2004 525i, and they are telling me that my Telematics Control Unit may malfunction. I assume to correct this problem they are going to replace the TCU, as they indicate it will take approx. one day for the repair. If they replace the TCU with a new one, does this mean I should be able to now play MP3's and that an ipod adapter will now work? <_<

Thanks for any info anyone can shed on this.
I know this is an older post, but I just found it. I have a 2005 545i that is an 11/04 build. The warranty expired in March 2009 and of course, the TCU just failed. Obviously, the $1,150 sticker to replace it is not exactly attractive. How do I find out if my car should have been covered under the recall?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!
