I got the rear side airbags option. My question is, with a 3 and 5 year old, should I have them turned off untill they are older???

If they are old enough to be out of child seats and may lay against the door if they fall asleep, yes, have them disabled until the kids are bigger. If they are restrained in seats, then you can probably leave them activated.

kscarrol's advice is pretty good but only you can decide how you're willing to balance the risks vs. the rewards.
The following threads will give you enough information to make a decision (don't bother asking BMW -- they'll err on the side of caution and say don't get them with kids.)

I put my kid in the middle for now with the rear facing seats using the inside latch connectors to connect to.
the center of the car IS the very safest spot in the car.

I had them deactivated. If you have kids (or adults for that matter) who tends to fall asleep in the car, they will usually rest their head against the door. To rest their head directly against the airbag can cause serious damage, so for me the answer is simple.
Deactivate the rear airbags!
