I really have this feeling it is something mechanical and that it is getting slightly worst and worst.....

Ricracing what did you have exchanged / serviced due to a same problem ?

Might be this?

so here are some news.
I went to the dealer today to give it a try......
After a quick check they discovered that there is nothing wrong with my front axle or steering - I just hope they really checked it.
However they did find that one of the main metal clamps that holds the entire exhaust system is broken!!!! The car has just 20k km and it is not even one year old...... probably a faulty part. Well they welded it back together. Of course all under warranty.

Guess what, no more noise from the front axle now! I guess the bottom of the car and the chassis is all so complicated and
interconnected somehow so you feel your loosen rear exhaust all the way in the front axle
I hope, I have to drive my usual routine road to make totaly sure.

Maybe the noise is from the steering wheel "box".
Got mine replaced 3 months ago and the noise is showing again. I have now 86.000 kms...

I'm starting to be more convinced it is the steering wheel box.....
It is just so hard to believe I';m the only one with E60 experiencing this and already after 20k km????

also I feel like I hear it more during those cold -20?C days....

has anybody noticed the cars axle and suspension is more noisy while extremely low temperatures?

you can hear a thump from the suspension when you go over a bad pothole, all my previous cars (Audi A6, merc E-class) had this trait also. When its colder i notice more noise, probably because the shocks are harder due to the cool temps...?
