Anyone notice when its raining the sensor works ok but when it stops and water drips on to the screen from a tree etc. it doesn't work and you have to flick the wipers manually. I thought, in the words of BMW that their rain sensor lets you get on with the job of driving whilst not having to operate wipers. Not so!

There's a rain sensor connected to the rear view mirror on the windshield, so if by chance the occasional drop hits the windshield somewhere else, it will not cause the wipers to turn on.

As stream said the sensor only sees it small little box, if there is a run elsewhere on the screen it wont know about it

Sorry Stream you've confused me or I've confused you! I'm saying I want the wipers to wipe all amounts of water from the screen so that I don't have to operate them at all i.e. a quick single sweep to remove droplets from trees that the sensor doesn't pick up when the green light is on.

What Stream and E60Speed are trying to say is that the rain sensor only "sees" a small section of the windshield (just a small part of where the rearview mirror mounts to the windshield) so if it's actually raining or if you're getting spray from a car/truck in front of you, the water will hit the windshield evenly and the sensor will pick it up. If you have a drop come off a tree and it lands in an area outside the sensor's "view", the sensor won't activate the wipers because as far as it's concerned, the windshield is dry.

Got it?

c'mon its not a drip sensor. It's a rain sensor! read the other posts on how it works and you will understand why it cannot sense one drip randomly on your windshield.

So you just need to drive with the sunroof open and you'll be good to go!
