The way i always do it is to add the new oil check the stick then leave it a couple of days and add again if required. I never add the total amount in the one day, 8.5 sounds slightly high.

Just to be safe, i mean you add most of the amount but i check it after a couple of days before starting up and i add if required. Please note that Diesels are pretty hard to get an acurate reading from the dipstick.
