Question for LCI car owners...

I think the outside temperature warning only chimes if the temperature drops to 37 degrees F from a temperature that is higher than that. In other words, if you get in the car and it's already below 37 degrees, then you won't hear a chime...
Probably nothing wrong....
Or, the car just does it when it wants...

Mine does the 37deg warning gong with the snowflake in both the HUD and instrument cluster warning area. I have not yet started in 37deg weather so can't comment on that and I doubt we will hit 32deg here in SoCal, so can only validate the 37deg gong. I hit this when cruising through the higher elevations over the ridge route on I5.

No, it chimes and alerts upon startup.

OK, so I get the first chance to use my heated seats in my new car, and for at least one day, I'm happy I spent the $500! Now for my question: I get in the car this morning and the temp outside is showing 35 degrees (F) on the dash, but I get no gong and snowflake message warning about low temperature. I assum this is still a feature on the car, btu why wouldn't I get the warning? On my old 545 it appeared at 37 degrees (F)...

Spot on. I just verified that this is indeed how it behaves.
Edit: Hey iversonm, do me a favor and when you drive the car again later, check something else for me. Once you get the initial warning, the snowflake and gong go away but I thought a check control message remained. Can you let me know what your car does? Does a check control message remain or do all warning go away after that initial minute or so. Thanks in advance!

Can anyone with an older BMW remind me if this is how it's always been?

Me too. It does give a warning on startup as well as if the temperature drops.

I believe rudy is right; bmw's have done this back to 1987 that I know of. It's warning you of the temperature drop and therefore if the road is wet it can become icy and therefore hazardous.

Ya... once in a blue moon here in CA we go get that gong... and ya... it does behave like that since at least the E34 and in the MINI... it will warn you if it drops to 37 or if you started the car at 35 it will warn you at start up. I think I've only seen the start up warning once in my life LOL usually its during the drive i get the warning as I pass through colder areas
