Question about service due items in idrive

Question about service due items in idrive
How are the mileage counters calculated? I recently brought my car in for service and service printout said the rear brake pads need to be replaced soon and are at "3" (i'm assuming that's 3/32?). When I was browsing the idrive, it says the rear brake pads are not due for another 21,000 miles.
