Has anyone ever swapped out satellite services? The car I've bought but don't have yet has installed Sirius, but all of my accounts are with XM. Anyone swap out before and know what's involved?

There's not really a true "swap" between Sirius and XM if you're looking for something that's integrated with iDrive, etc.

BMW only supports Sirius so if you want XM, you'll need to get something aftermarket. Obviously, now that the merger has gone through, all of this may change in the future...

There is nothing to swap out. XM isn't supported through I-drive. You'll have to go aftermarket, example Denison Ice Link; or use the OEM AUX port to get sound. Control of XM channels would be throught the aftermarket XM receiver that you chose.

My last car was a Yukon Denali and it came with factory XM. I wanted Sirius and DEI made a converter that allowed me to convert my factory XM to Sirius. I have only heard of XM to Sirius converters, not Sirius to XM. Now that XM and Sirius have merged, supposedly within the next few weeks people will be able to get some programming from XM if you have Sirius for an extra $4 a month or so. It's only some channels though. So perhaps you can switch your service to Sirius and still be able to receive XM channels that you currently enjoy.

Aren't these 2 companies in the process of merging?

Yes, but their hardware is incompatible. They are going to offer 10 channels cross broadcast between both services in the short term. New hardware which will receive both services will be developed but that will take some time.
