You are very welcome. Great about the meter. There is not much testing going on now. cobradav and grogan545i are waiting out the summer--as I am for the most part. I will be doing some testing though to see how my car reacts to very hot weather. It would be great to have you add to the testing thread.

I never had the chance to finish those other threads, but have you gone to the track? Results?

I am not talking about the engines' torque but the torque that you are putting through the wheels, onto the tarmac.
This is at it's maximum when the car reaches it's peak horsepower, normally close to max rev. When you shift close to max rev, the engine will continue acceleration from a good RPM level (close to max engine torque) and this behaviour will continue until you reach VMAX.
If you shift too early, engine RPM will drop too low after upshift and your acceleration will be slower.

I think understand the torque / hp theory, but find myself get a bit confused when it comes to the effect of the gearing.
From what I have read, the optimum shift point is going to be where the torque at the wheels is HIGHER in the next gear, than in the current one. In most petrol cars this is going to be close to the redline, since peak torque is also delivered right up close to the redline.
But... in the BMW diesels, peak torque is available from say 1750-4000rpm, then it drops away sharply, so in theory the shift point should be earlier than the redline (or am I confused).
This being the case .. is the steptronic programme in the diesel flawed .... because when it goes into 'extreme sport' or kickdown modes it holds onto the gear RIGHT until the redline?
Or am I missing something here ?

I am also interested in finding out what is the best time people have got for 0-60 on a 530i. There have been threads regarding 545 and 550 but none for 530. If someone could share their numbers, that would be great.
BMW claims 6.6s with Step but aren't they known to be conservative? So, has anyone got in 6.3 range?

I get on average 6.7 with Step at sea level. Its not scientific but most times are 6.5 to 6.9.

Anyone know if the E60's tach is slow to respond like the E39's? I know it was common to hit the rev limiter before the needle showed you were about to hit the wall. I would try it but I'm still trying to break in the engine in my E60.
