That really sucks.
You wait this long and in the end you get a lemon or an almost lemon.
The car is not a lemon, it's a updated new model that needs to air out all the kinks at my expense.

...and imagine if this had happened on an ED trip? That would be a nightmare.

The car is driveable. I drove it for 2 days before I was able to drive it to the dealer. I hope it all goes well and I never see this proble again....

I haven't had any issues with not being able to move the shifter, etc. but I do have an intermittent problem that is not really a big deal -- at least for me.

On my SAT, I pretty much always use the manual mode (shift lever moved to the left gate). As most of you with LCI cars know, when you press the "P" button to put the transmission in park, the car will electronically shift the transmission and, if the lever is still in the left gate, it will mechanically move the lever over to the right to put it back in the "main" gate.

Once every so often, my lever will not move back to the main gate automatically -- even though the transmission ends up in park. You can see and hear the lever trying to move but it eventually gives up. When this happens, I can easily move the lever to the right -- there's nothing stopping it or otherwise causing it to jam. I'm thinking the actuator or whatever it is that causes the thing to move is weak and unable to overcome the small amount of resistance that is normally there when you move from left to right...

I think so -- in another recent topic, he called attention to this post and since it dealt specifically with problems happening with the new electronic shifter on the LCI cars, I figured I'd add to it rather than start a new topic. (Besides, I kind of forgot about my issue until he posted a link to this thread.)

Either way, old car or not, it was a problem he had with the shifter so we might as well keep things neat and tidy around here!

I bought the 535xi 2008 in the beginning of the month and already have a problem with the new electronic gear shift. The problem is when I was parked and attempted to put the car in drive the shifter would not allow me to put it in gear, similar to not pressing the brake and attempting to put it in gear. I had to second guess myself so I did it again and sure as %$@ the gear would not go back into drive. So I put it in reverse and then try to put it and drive then it worked. I did this several times and there is definately a problem with the shifter. I called BMW service and spoke to the manager and brought the car in this morning. The shop manager checked my car and noticed the problem. He told me he was going to put it on the computer and see if there was anything wrong with it. I waited and after a while he came back and told me that the computer did not find anything wrong with it and he would have to call BMW in Germany and have them send detailed information on the shifter and what may cause this problem. He said that the car is to new and they don't have any information readily available. He further stated that the shifter may need to be replaced and they will have to get it from Germany. Is this common with new cars or is it just mine? I mean somepart going bad so soon. Already a wheel allignment and now this.

I haven't even enjoyed my car.. So far I have 1300 miles on it. I drove it to Virginia from NY and Back. That's how I noticed it needed some allignment.

Thoughts, Comments anything I can get. Am I making a big deal out of nothing?

Rick...

Rick - frustrating for sure...but hang in there - you'll get it worked out and have many trouble free miles...just think...you got to fall for your new car all over again

Okay, maybe my "bright idea" above wasn't so bright after all...

So I take it this is an old post by the date but Ill chime in with something-as usual-I actually enjoyed the new shifter-I think it is really smooth for shifting forsure. However unless my shifterwas faulty on the loaner I had, I noticed that you could shift it into park even without having your foot on the brake and that was really annoying due to the placement of the button being where my thumb nearly sits. I dont like the fact a couple times I hit the button and it jerked me into park at a stop light.

So Rick, Did they replaced the shifter? Does it work now the way it supposed to?
