But there should be in those type of diesel car the auxiliary heater (at least E39 or E53 had them) without the option, just only to help heated the engine when is cold?

I would imagine you would have timer menu in I-Drive even if that was only engine heater.

Cars without a webasto parking heater installed have a electric heater installed, that are heating the coolant in the heat exchanger, so the cabin can reach a comfortable temperature fast in coldish weather.

If you have the webasto heater installed (like I have) there's no electric heater installed and the webasto will function as a "zusatz heizung" as the E39 had. The webasto will run when the outside temperature is below 5 degrees Celsius and the coolant temperature is below 73 degrees Celsius.

Some of the thermostat's in our E61 is not working as it should. It's running at 80-86 degrees all the time, after many miles... BMW Europlus warranty here I come...

Ok, it looks like I have an electric heater, but just last chance, does someone know where the webasto should be? In E39 it was behind the front left wheel, by the wheel arch.
Pszyman do you know where is yours? Thx

I've resolved my issue by going to a different dealer. I discussed the issue in detail with them in advance by sending them photo's of the operating temp in different conditions and explained both my diagnosis and the history with the first dealer. Car went into them this morning at 09:00

By 12:00 The result was was that both thermostats had been changed under warranty (saving me circa £400).

On the way up there this morning (50 mile drive, 95% dual carriageway @ 60mph) the coolant temp varied between 65C and 80C (only hit 80 momentarily at the peak of a long steep hill, mostly it was mid low 70's) mpg averaged 36mpg on the OBC.

On the way back down (same journey in reverse) the coolant temp had risen and now fluctuates between 89C and 92C. Average MPG on the way back down was 41mpg (this time sitting about 70mph).

I know the OBC mpg figures aren't 100% accurate but as a comparison to before and after they're pretty damning.

The car warms up much much quicker too. From cold (it was -2 here today) last week it took about 12 miles at motorway speeds to get up to 65C. This afternoon it hit 80C in about 2.5 miles across town.

My faith is restored in the BMW brand (if not my local dealer)

Thanks to the OP for raising my awareness of this as an issue.

Another happy DIY'er

I replaced the main stat yesterday, it was more work then expected, had to remove the whole exhaust gas cooler but i still did it within 1 evening

Running happy at ~91c now instead of 78c

I am also happy to report that after replacing the main thermostat, all is ok with the temperature.

The engine warms up much quicker and holds the temperature between 88 and 92 degrees Celsius (65-75 before).

I have to calculate the new fuel consumption when I have the chance at a longer run.

One happy 530d driver on my part for now
