On the first tank I got 35mpg in mixed driving (half motorway and half town) and 40 on a long run at 70-80 mph. Vs before 30 and 36 respectively. So far 10%+ more economical with my main therm changed.
Good to hear the MPG has improved.

My fuel consumptions varies between 6.8 and 7.2 L/100KM mixed driving. (42 - 39 MPG UK) after both stats changed and MAF cleaned.

I just tested my E61 520D from 2007. I've done almost 30 km and the highest temp that I got is 87C.
Ambient temperature is around 17C
Also the white stripes on the rev counter always stays around 4100 rpm, shouldn't these go higher?

isn't a 2007 an LCI model? If so then the marks on the revcounter are fixed. (BMW disabled them on LCI models).
87C doesn't sound to bad.

No, it isn't an LCI, it is in fact produced 11/2006, but first usage was 2/2007.

Hello chaps,

I found this forum (and thread) through Google'ing the EGR Thermostat part number (11717787870) in an attempt to discover what it actually was!

I have an E46 320d which recently suffered a blown turbo and pushed oil into the engine, end result was me spending over ?3,000 replacing the turbo and engine on a car that's not worth much more than that!

I bought a 3 year old E90 320d engine that had done 21,000 miles as the block is the same as the E46. Now I have lots of E90 engine spares to get rid of. One of which is the 11717787870 EGR thermostat http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?mo...fg=50&hl=39 - item number 8. I'd be willing to sell it to an E60.net member for ?11 including P&P.

I hope this isn't considered spamming, it is not intended that way at all. I'm hoping that this is a mutually beneficial offer between myself and E60.net members who are having trouble with their thermostat.

I have very good ebay feedback (see my latest auction for an E90 EGR valve http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=220399928738 ) and I'm registered at www.bimmerforums.co.uk with the same username.

All the best,
sdp

To clearify; The EGR valve lets a small amount of exhaust gasses go back into the intake manifold. This is done to lower the combustion temps (because of less oxygen in the mixture) resulting in lower NOx emissions.

The EGR gasses on their way to the intake manifold, are cooled down by the engine coolant. This EGR cooling flow is regulated by a 2nd smaller thermostat the EGR thermostat.

So basically you should not mix up the two; the EGR circuit routing exhaust gasses to the intake and the cooling circuit sooling the EGR gasses.
There was this tought that just hit me when reading your post mini_me.

Could there be a connection between the issues with the "swirl flaps issue" and defect EGR Termostats? I mean, if the EGR gasses are too cold they increase the wear and tear of the flaps?

Could be but I don't think so. I think that the carbon deposits in the intake manifold due to the EGR valve are a contributing factor to the flap failure.
People that drive their cars in the RPM range/throttle position where the EGR opens send lots of carbon rich exhaust air to the intake manifold.

This carbon sticks to all part in the manifold including the flaps. Once the carbon starts blocking the closure of the flaps the problems begin.

Just my $0.02

Just changed main thermostat today as well as earlier the EGR one.

Anybody who can get the main thermostat installed for ?100 trust me that is money well spent! Extremely awkward to get to and the chance of ar$ing it up is quite high, esp if you cant get the EGR cooler off fully like on my car..

But the good news is that i am now getting 89C minimum more like 90-92 driving fast on a road. That is a good 10C+ increase prior to the project.

I will attempt to post some fuel figures when i have done a tank. Trouble is were getting towards ac on weather (not that i am complaining)so a valid comparison may be tricky, let's see...

Hi I new to forum
I have followed thread and it seems likely my car is probably suffering from same issues.
However I needed to first get into the temp of coollant menu.
Got there but somehow on menu 18 pressed trip and it now error message " says release parking brake"
I was doing this while ignition 1 not on start engine but with radio on.

Now when press trip i can't get into menu at all after holding down for a while.
How do i reset.

Managed to get to menu again
I seem to unlock at 19.00 and then 01 appears and i skip to 01.07 menu which reads

Update:

Managed to unlock and get to menu 07.00 which gives me temp(core temp)
It started at 34 and went up to 67 after 5 mins driving..will update how it progresses as i drive.
Can get into it every time once unlocked.
Cheers mini-me for this excellent thread. Might get to the bottom of this fuel economy issue.
