85 Max when slow
80 Max when faster

Is this within normal band or should i investigate thermostats?

Think the outcome of this topic is; no, 80-85 isn't correct.

The least you could do is investigate (or have investigated) the EGR thermostat. Low cost job.

if like me you was a little unsure about getting the main thermo changed because of the cost, try getting an independent specialist to change it. Dealers if gone through the correct channels will charge you for half an hour diagnosis, 3 hours labour, and parts, total will be around the ?340.00 mark. even though the part costs about ?32.00

i got it changed because i had it done cheap, but what would do is read this whole thread through carefully and the first step would be to change the EGR thermo, this part is cheap and very easy to change. some where on the first few pages of this thread it explains how to go about doing that. Monitor you vehicles temperature and then decide if you want to change the main thermo.

BUT IF WAS YOU GET THE PARTS CHANGED BECAUSE THE WILL ONLY CAUSE DAMAGE IN THE LONG RUN

Had my main thermostat changed under warranty yesterday and now get 93/94C so all's well now.
Had it done at Specialist Cars Stevenage who were fantastic. They found the source of a rattle while I was there which turned out to be a split cat! Then they found 2 glow plugs registering fault codes. They changed everything the same day under warranty. The service was excellent. Jim on the service desk is a top man.
Thanks again for the recommendation Stephen. I'll be using them again despite them being about 60 miles from my home in Kent!

Pleased you got it all sorted and were happy with the service.

My car has been behaving strangely over the past few weeks, when I first got it back the MPG was fantastic and settled around 37mpg combined for a few weeks (mainly longish journeys) and felt really rapid and able to cruise on very light throttle

The DPF regeneration then started happening every 200 or so miles regardless of the journey type and the MPG has plumeted back down to 28mpg combined, I got less than 400 miles out of the last tank and that included a 230 mile non stop motorway journey! The car also seems to need more throttle and is no so responsive.

The car will be going back in soon, not sure if there is a problem with the DPF (diesel particle filter) The regeneration used to be every 1000 miles or so and has gradually reduced and had settled at about every 400 - 450 miles but a sudden change to every 200 miles means there is clearly a problem somwhere - could it be blocked up?

The use of the car has not changed at all - some short but mainly 40+ miles on A roads and motorways.

I can't believe the hassle this car has caused, we also run a Ford Focus and in over 5 years and 80000 miles other than routine servicing miles it has needed one wheel bearing!!!!

Wish I didn't like BMW's so much

How can you tell so well that it is regenerating?

I hardly notice it at all. Must say im not paying any attention to it though.

Egr thermostat replaced. Still running 80-85 max moving, however warm up times are reduced. Could blow through old stat so was knackered. I guess I'll need to do the main stat also. But excellent discussion here, thanks!

The temps are spot on running at 90-91c

The regeneration is really obvious, the car will drop down a gear if cruising and the exhaust takes on a bass heavy note for about 10 minutes.
It also feels a bit sluggish and unresponsive while this happens.

If you pull over to check, the heat from the tailpipes is massive with the exhaust making a Tinging sound due to the heat.

I don't know how often it should happen or what causes it but every 200 miles is too often when only a few weeks ago it was 400+ and a while back it was every 1000 or so

On the first tank I got 35mpg in mixed driving (half motorway and half town) and 40 on a long run at 70-80 mph. Vs before 30 and 36 respectively. So far 10%+ more economical with my main therm changed.
