Sorry if this is a stupid question, but does the 545 also have this EGR valve? Or is it a diesel thing?

Asking because I seem to have the same problem, engine temp varies with outside temperature. Today it's 7?C outside and engine does not go past 70?C.

I think both diesel and petrol have EGR systems, thus EGR thermostat.

Go to BMWFANS or REALOEM websites and lookup you engine, you will find it out there.

I tried to look at realoem but can't find an EGR valve.

And anyway, I don't really get it: Doesn't the EGR valve control exhaust gases (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) and not coolant liquid?

It is true that the egr valve itself controls the flow of exh. Gases to the intake
Manifold. In this topic im talking about the EGR thermostat that regulates the flow
Of coolant cooling the EGR gases.

My Ride: 2008 520d LCI. HUD, active lights + high beam assistant, panoramic sunroof, manual gbox, grey leather and navi professional. It's a nice car with an impressive engine.

I have an LCI 520d 2008 and it does not have this egr thermostat.
Mine reaches 96 degrees (varies between 88 and 96)! But it takes some time for it to reach that temperature. At least half an hour of driving.

Tested it this weekend in -5 degrees celcius.

The consumption may seem rediciously low, but by using the hidden OBC menu to access the number of litres of diesel on the tank, noting how much fuel I consumed during the trip, the number seem correct.
In other words, the consumption has gone down from 5.9 to 4.4 after changing the EGR thermostat. Please note that I am not driving like a mad man, but I am not putting the tranny in neutral during downhills either :-p

Would be interesting to hear if anyone other than me has noticed a drop in MPG after changing the thermostat.

Good to hear m8! and yes, as Posted few days ago on page 6 I did notice a drop in MPG (much highway traffic though).

Keep in mind that keeping the transm. in gear during downhill will give better MPG than putting it in neutral. This is because the injection is closed when coasting in gear. When in neutral you still use some fuel to keep the engine idling.

At least half an hour. I'm guessing the main thermostat isn't shutting off entirely. However, I don't think I'd manage to get it replaced under warranty as it's not far off and I'm sure the dealer will just say "It's within specification". Anyone know what the main thermostat specs are (opening and closing temps)?

I had a brand new 530D Auto last week as a courtesy car. Looked to see what temp that was getting up to and it never got over 73C on the same 35 minute journey! The car had done less than 2,000 miles and was registered between September 08 and now. Amazing.

Nope dont know the specs. I do know however that an engine
Should be able to reach oper. Temp in a reasonable amount of time.
