Coming back to this old topic as this seems the be the best thread describing this problem.

Has anyone got any final fix for this problem? I am now about to book third time with my dealer, first time software update and according to them it fixed everything (actually it fixed the automatic folding so it actually works now when locking the car). It didn't fix the original problem with mirrors unfolding too much so we booked second time right away. Today they synchronized the mirrors according to the factory instructions (car was supposed to learn the positions) and claimed that everything is fixed again. After one kilometer drive and being parked outside for 8 hours (-20C / -4F), I returned to my car to find out that both mirrors are suffering this problem just like before. I had to turn them to the correct position so I would be able to drive, when I drove few hundred meters then the car tried to synchronize the mirrors by unfolding them completely (unfolded them over) while I was moving (this could be considered quite bad idea since car was moving).

So I will need to go back for the third time. E60 isn't designed for winter apparently. First the air condition going nuts during certain temperatures in winter time (according to factory it was faulty battery cable which was replaced, it helped a bit but didn't completely remove the problem), now this mirror problem. What next ...

I haven't washed the car for some time because it has been pretty cold recently, the car has spent time indoors at the dealer so it has melted the ice and dried a bit but still when it gets colder it breaks the folding function of the mirrors. I am thinking that I will demand them to replace both mirrors next. Maybe that will help? Any other suggestions except giving up and stop using the folding function (I am still thinking that if the car has that then it should be working no matter what kind of weather). I can understand that ice will cause problems and sometimes I would need to synchronize the mirrors or help the car by turning them manually but car should then get back on track by itself. At least that was what my previous car did.

Otherwise, BMW during the winter is pretty fun car to drive. And surprisingly warm inside.
