Costco has one for $30 I think.

Plug it into your OBDII port to check the P Codes.
The code will give you an idea of what problem you have before handing $100 "diag" fee to dealer.
+ 1. Picked mine up from Costco for $30 and worked like a charm on my wife's Audi allroad. Was able to tell the tech exactly what's wrong (down to which bank sensor was having issues) and he was appreciative. Saved $130 diagnosis fee, thingy already paid for itself.

Have a look at this SIB... Sounds very familiar, although technically it's only supposed to apply to 2003/2004 cars:

SIB 11 03 06

There's a 'repair kit' for the work in this SIB which is less than $20 per side I think.

I had the same error message with check engine light staying lit, on my 05 545i. Per my invoice, the fault code was 2EF4 [T-SAT MECHANISM STUCKED] It turned out to be the thermostat was sticking in the open position so they replaced it. Yours maybe a different issue as there can multiple increased emissions light along with check engine faults.

Were there some other symptoms or just the lights?

Only thing I noticed was the engine idled slightly rougher but it wasn't a big noticeable difference.

Let me clarify that last statement. When the check engine light and message came on I drove the car for 3-4 days until I could get it in for a service. During that period only abnormal issue I noticed was the engine idled slightly rougher a few times. Now, I don't like driving with warning lights on so maybe I was being over sensitive to any slight difference in the car's behavior. I mentioned this to my SA and he said the V8 can idle rough periodically and it was not a problem.

I also hate to drive with the check engine light on but I will have to wait till next week to get it checked and fixed.

I think I also experience rougher idle but it may be due to my imagination
