I have posted before asking if anyone finds the e60 steering stiff.
I tried the e39 and found it too be much lighter than the e60. Does anyone who still owns or anyone who had an e39 find the steering heavier on the e60?

 

I have a 99 540i (E39) and an 04 545i with active steering. To me, the E39 is much heavier. The E60 is really nimble, but still connected to the road. Maybe someone without active steering can comment.

 

I have had three e60s the first two had heavy steering and also a low speed knocking noise on turning , I complained to the dealer, they took both cars in and found it normal ,but had to change the ball joint to stop the knocking. The last e60 loaner was newer and had feather light streering?

When I purchased the last car the steering was great, I also noticed that I have not noticed the uneven front tyre wear which the previous two suffered from.

I am convinced they change the spec on the steering some how in the later cars. And asked if they could do some sort of retro fit, they said no and blamed it on the heavier runflats.

All three cars have had runflats and no fancy steering gimicks.

My car is good now, if not a little light!

 

I can't compare between E60s/E39s, but when I first drove my E60, I found the steering much lighter than that of my 120d.

(but I do have servotronic which is supposed to make it lighter at parking speeds)

 

I don't have active steer, and would NEVER buy it. I got the bimmer because it was the only car that steered as well as my Corvette. The harder the better, I love how nimble.

If steering's too hard you got two choices: 1. hit the gym and master the wheel! 2. Buy a Cadillac, then you can use 1 finger and spin the wheel round and round...

JMHO, of course...

 

Dont know about the gym, only know that the e60 is much stiffer than the e39. And i have that knocking noise when pulling away on full lock. Thats the knock they changed the steering column for!
If a woman was driving my e60 they would have trouble steering.
The dealer has said that they are not adjustable and i betya they have sorted it on newer models with a stronger power steering pump or something. Maybe there is no fix for it.

 

I know, I was just joshin ya. If it is really that hard, take it in. Any sounds are definately bad!
