Does this only apply to the 530?

Yes, this is fact is a timing issue.

I am actually experiencing this too, as of this weekend - this was quite noticable on the highway while trying to pull up to higher speeds & merge with traffic on I-4 / I-95 / I-75.
My Audi A4 used to to this as well, however only after having been tuned with a rather aggressive pumpgas program. HOWEVER when i switched to the racegas program (requiring 100 Octane) the timing would be smooth again & less misfires would happen. The car retards the timing, to not burn up the engine - or so it thinks.

This could be caused by a faulty sensor, or shitty gas. I believe the reason for why Manual Transmission owners experience this issue is due to the high RPM ... the automatic transmission under normal circumstance would've upshifted already, or would be just about to.

I would believe this applies to all 6 cylinder E60's (US).

Try pumping some race gas (98 Oct. / 100 Oct. / 102/103 Oct.) & see if that helps ... or for home made racegas .. stop by a hardware store (home depot) or paint shop & pick up some Toulene ... mix it in with your tank.

x = gallons of gas
y = gallons of toulene
z = total amount

x+y=z

x/z*93 + y/z*114 = total octane

of course the GREAT spark plugs we have in our cars these days don't make things better either .. YES, they last 100,000 miles ... however they run like shit. I'm almost certain that if you change the plugs to colder running copper plugs, and maybe bump up your octane level a little ... these power cutouts will go away. but wintertime should fix it too ... these issues more than likely will only occur in the hot summer weather.

some quick done math if you want to try the toulene:

For: 101.2 Octane

x = 6
y = 4
z = 10

x/z*93 + y/z*114 = total octane
6/10*93 + 4/10*114 = 101.2
(55.8 + 45.6)

For: 98.25 Octane

x = 6
y = 2
z = 8

x/z*93 + y/z*114 = total octane
6/8*93 + 2/8*114 = 98.25
(69.75 + 28.5)

it is safe ..... however don't try to mix up 120 Octane ... i generally wouldn't recommend running over 105-107 Octane .... most guys in the turbo crowd do this trick, its easy & fairly affordable race gas ....

I personally have ran it quite a few times ... and i never had any issues.

wiszmaster - you'd be the first to report this issue with the N52 - I know for certain my car doesn't do it, are you talking about your new 06 530i or your old 04?

Also, if I read the service bulletin for the M54 correctly, this has nothing to do with actual knocking or relative fuel quality. It has everything to do with shitty manufacturing tolerances allowing enough play in the "DISA valve" to allow a violent enough vibration (probably either itself resonating at 4K RPM or sympathetically to something resonating at 4K RPM) such that it is -misinterpreted- by the knock sensor as a detonation.

Perhaps the component responsible for generating the harmonic is unique to the manual and SMG driveline - hence the lack of the problem in the step.

yes, i am reporting this on the '06 with the new engine. it was very hot this weekend, between 34*C-39*C .... car is currently in for battery drain issue, replacement of the comfort headrest, and getting a new tire (nail) ... should have it back tomorrow .. .i will see if i can replicate it, or if it was just due to the extreme heat of this past weekend.

will post up.

take care.
