I recently had a "engine malfunction" warning and i sent mine in to get it fix. According to the dealer, they reprogrammed the ecu beside a few other things w/ the fuel pump. w/o expecting it, the first thing i felt when i step into my car was the push is gone. and i checked the DS mode and its feeling weaker too. has anyone experienced this?
thanks.
thanks.
if the dealer touches/remaps/overwrites on the ecu, then the performance remap will be gone. best bet is to contact the vendor to remap your ecu again to get the "push" back. usually the 1st time its free and then every time after that there will be a small fee. hope this helps

I could go in to about a two page rant but won't
BMW change the way the DMS works on version 29.2+ and newer versions. The E9X and E8x guys have been having kittens since it fundamentally changes the way the turbos work ( hell the EPA got involved and all the N54 09's got held up in customs till BMW re certified the engine, hince the 3-6 week delay on n54 motored cars).
Basically the new software opens the waste gates up under 2800-3000rpm where they on pre 29.2 used to be closed. The reason is because the BMW bean counters thought that this was cheaper than recalling all the N54's and fixing the rattling waste gates and turbos ( if you don't have them wait a bit after 7000k on the clock and it usually starts when you let off the gas at low rpm or at idle). Now with the gates open that low it takes the engine time to spool up boost again, hince the lag that you now have.
Most dealers her have been told to say that is how they work, which was previously not true, and if you Dyno the car the hp and tq numbers will be the same , but the power curves will be different since the boost now come in at 3k instead of 1400.
The new corporate line is well that is How they will work from now on. BMW Europe seem to be actually working on some fixes , but BMW US has basically give the finger to all the N54 owners and seems indifferent. Also the new software adds a data logging feature and a parameter that looks for "unreasonable" torque #'s and flags them for the service Dept. so that they can void your warranty for using engine mods..
Most of the big tuners have already figured out the issues with this , so it will be a cat and mouse game from now on.
Since you had the dreaded HPFP failure that seems to effect a great number of N54's (High Ethanol levels in the gas you use seems to be the #1 reason for the failures , and bmw is on gen #4 of the HPFP due to the High number of issues).
The SOP for a service dept is to "Upgrade/Infect" the car with the new software at the time of the HPFP install. Same goes for the waste gate issue , even though it does nothing to solve the problem (readjusting the waste gate articulation arm and lok-tight it down seem to be the correct fix for the time being, but you need a atmospheric/ or pressure gauge to determine the correct waste gate settings.)
So solutions ? other than the handful of aftermarket tuners , none officially form BMW.
The part that really shines on alot of the E9x owners is that BMW has DE-TUNED there cars after they bought the car...

Very interesting bigbadbull,
Thanks for sharing.
I wonder if this same problem exists in Europe?
The new 740i (F01) has a upgraded N54 engine with 326 hp and 450 Nm,
is the problem fixed in it?

yes and No... Read the links in my sig.
on the new 7 they have changed the power maps so it has alot more of it's power up top instead all the way threw the power band. Also the N54's power stats are reported on the "low" side of what they really are. Most co's that have dyno'ed them say they should be around 320-330hp...from the factory, And the it is mostly a marketing ploy due to the E90/2 M3 V8.

Damn, that's 123 pages and growing. I guess this 29.2 thing is affecting a lot of ppl. I definitely didn't finish the entire 123 page. it seems like the problem is discovered in june and there is still no positive solution offered by bmw yet. r they simply trying to make everyone accept the fact and move on? after a couple more years when ppl sell their car the new owner will never know this problem ever existed. that sucks.

My Ride: 2008 535i: June 6th start build, complete June 17th, at NY Port July 5th, at dealer July 10th, took delivery Friday July 13- Plantimum Bronze/Natural Brown Leather/Light Poplar, Sport Package, Sport Auto, Active Steering, Premium Package, CWP & PDC. Dinan Performance Software 384hp & 421 ft/lbs.
This doesn't sound right. In those 120 pages did anyone show a before and after dyno printout? BMW advertises 300 ft/lbs at 1400 rpm, they just can't change that. Mazda did something like that with the Miata where it didn't produce the power they stated it did, after complaints came into consumer affairs they either took back the cars or offered money to customers.
