There were a number of threads about this problem a few years back. However, after many frustrated owners complained and complained BMW just said it was 'normal'. The conclusion was that some were just bad and nothing could be done...
hi guys, thanks for all your messages, but i really getting FXXXXD off now, i my way it work this morning a reset the computer to monitor what king of mpg i was actually getting, well this morning 3 miles into work, 10 min max, i got average 18 mpg, that is poor, what should i do?
can not afford to run this car, it just killing in the pocket, i now there deff something wrong but what i dont know, the dealer is saying the need to diagnose the problem at ?116 +VAT per hour, and after that hour it may take longer to find where the problem is and then it may need some parts, may be cost about ?400 in total.
i dont want to sell it as i only had it for about 4 weeks in total, anyone have anymore ideas???

Not even 535d owners get this kind of mileage. How old is your car? Did you buy it brand new?

My 530i petrol gives me around 28mpg (combined) so 525d should be better I would think. Not sure where you are located in UK but might be worth approaching several dealers round the area and asking for their help - if lucky you might get hold of someone willing to help more than the dealer you talking to now. Also there are a couple of independents who are cheaper than dealers and can possibly help out:
1. http://www.mstyle.co.uk/
2. http://www.technosport.co.uk/index.html
Also try emailing BMW UK and see what they suggest - I suspect they'll just say take it to a dealer.

My 530i (LCI) returns 32 UK mpg or 26.5 US mpg in daily commute including trafficjams and motorway journeys. I believe the computer sometimes need to be reset, but if the problem remains it could very well be a "hardware failure".

The fuel computer may not be giving the correct reading... You have confirmed it's correctly configured in iDrive, i.e. UK mpg instead of US?
As you've only had the car for 2 weeks I'd be chasing the dealer for more investigation, without charge!!! I would explore rejection options? Was it main dealer? Indeed the 'increased emissions' error should be investigated under 'warranty'...

That's shocking MPG, my UK 530i SE can get nearly 40mpg on the motorway at 70-75mph, also 25 or more mpg around town.
Did you buy private? If so no wonder they sold it!!

Sorry to hear about your poor mpg for your 525d Sport.
On the point of fuel consumption my 530dA (231BHP) returns average 40 mpg (UK) or 33.3 mpg (US) or approx 7lt/100km. On a motorway journey cruising between 80-90 mph and slowing to 60 mph (stupid UK speed limits on motorways) this increases to 43-44 mpg. This equates to approx 630 miles per tank.
One point - I try to keep my tyres at 36 psi as reduced pressure seems to have the biggest impact on mpg.
Anyone else seeing similar figures?
My car is a 530d SE Auto (231 BHP) with 18" rims 2006 vintage and approx 27k miles on the clock.
