Living in Northern California I don't see the need for AWD. Just an additional mechanical complication for me. That being said, I can certainly understand the value of AWD in parts of the world with snow, rough climate, etc.

If you are in a cold climate, get the X. The RWD 5er handels IMO pretty bad in snow. I have new good winter tires and I'm used to snow driving since I'm from Sweden. My previous car was a VW Touareg, so that one doesn't count. But I also own a new Saab 9-3 Convertible and a BMW E46. They are much better in snow.

But still, I chose the RWD because I think the X spoils much of the driving pleasure.

Live in MN and snow tires are fine. Traffic moves so slow AWD doesn't mean anything and RWD is much better in the dry IMO.

Hi tesla,

How does the S8 compare against the others?
Performance, comfort, running costs... anything what comes to your mind.

I would appreciate your thoughts since Audi S8 is in my shopping list with 530xd, 535d and (do I want to say) A6 3.0 TDI

I know that S8 is a bit different and the biggest difference is that it runs on gasoline and is older.
But on the other hand initial cost is way cheaper and with that price difference you can buy gasoline for years.

FYI

I have driven my father's 2002 S8 and it handles very well for a big car. I would consider one over a 530x if handling is important to you given depreciation is pretty bad (good for you though). Also, I heard from an Audi SA that the S8's are pretty bulletproof.
