If your going to drop an entire engine than look for a higher output one-for a couple grand more IF that much-you could get a used 225hp or 255hp engine which is a direct swap into your car-instead of the 185hp I believe the 04 525 had-might as well take advantage of the situation-if it has to occur this could be the bright side!

So here are a few photos of the latest bad news. Now the engine has been stripped its obvious that as the broken con rod exited the engine it managed to take starter motor and a big section of the gear box with it. So this sends the repair bill north and I'll not have any spare cash for a while.

Glad you are all OK.
Can't see why that cannot be repaired unless the loss of fluids have warped the block
Might be worth paying for a 200 UK pound engineers report from the AA or RAC and get some proferssional metallurgy testing done on that conrod for about 150 UK pounds. That will show if it's manufacturing fault which it has to be. Use that to lean on BMW.
Also try indepenant BMW garages, they are much cheaper and can find a new engine easier.
Once repaired I would seriously consider having your car dissapeared and getting another one via insurance (not that I am endorsing or promoting that idea).
Otherwise the damage / repair will show on any report when you try to sell
Good luck !

WOW! Hard to tell from that carnage what caused the rod to fail. BMW is supposed to have a very strong connecting rod.
Sorry you have to deal with that. Good luck with the repairs.

I wouldn't be so fast on the trigger. You could try contacting BMW directly and try to find out how they feel about this type of failure on one of their high end cars. You might be able to get them to chip in for parts while you take care of the labor or maybe split the cost 50/50. I don't think this is an every day occurrence and it could be a defective part in your particular car.

Glad to hear that your family's fine. Keep us posted. G/L
+3 ... especially if you've documented regular service you should expect some assistance from BMW. It's very unusual for the 6 CYL cars to go terminal in this manner. I suspect that a (broken) rod was a defect unless BMW can prove neglect - like failing to change oil regularly.

That's just what you need! you can swap all ancillaries of your engine, install it and your ready to go! You can save some cash selling your engine's head if has not been affected
No worries about how it looks, yours will look the same when you dismantle it.

....Hmm, e46 3series has different oil pan while E39 and E60 are the same.

Here's your oil pan hehe

Hmm you also need a 6speed manual gearbox...

Ok, here is a nice 6 speed gearbox for you! You can use the clutch and flywhweel of yours..

hmm, I'm sorry but I think that the engine haven't had enough amount of oil in it, can't believe that the amount of oil we can see spilled on tarmac is 7.5 litres of oil. I'd say it's 3-4 litres max... The engine block and oil pan is completely broken, so there is no oil remaining into the engine at this pic, engine is totally empty.
7.5 litres of oil would have drawn an "oil lake" around and following the car...
