I've been a member on here a while but never posted before, I felt I needed to share. I was cruising on the 406 at 50mph with the wife and my 3 week old baby in the back yesterday and all of a sudden the engine made a bang and a sound like rattling spanners in a sack. Family are all home and safe which is the most important thing but this morning the beautiful 5 series is in the local garage and early indications are that the engine is terminal, bit depressed to tell you the truth...

Anyone got any tips on what a new engine will cost me?

First of all, I am glad that your family and yourself are all fine and that this was limited to the mechanical failures. One thing I've learned in life is: no matter how hard you get "hit", it can always get worse. I don't mean this facetiously, but I think you already know that. That said, I'm glad it was not worse.

As for the new engine, I would think that your best deals would be with someone who is parting out a wrecked e60 (or another BMW with a compatible engine - maybe e9x or some X3 or X5). But before you go there, I recommend you find out what is broken and whether you could just replace several parts - it might save you a lot of trouble. Then again, it is hard to be sure with no definite "diagnosis" as of yet.

Good Luck, brother - keep us posted on your progress.

Hi, haven't quite managed to master the sig. I'm in East London, it is a 2004 525i manual.

04 msn I agree w v, try and find a wrecked one, here in Cali it's difficult (not sure abt England) but we have ferocious smog laws that make engine swaps a major pain! Good luck brotha

Just called the garage and they say that the car broke a conrod and its mashed loads of the engine its put a hole in the engine casing. It needs a replacement engine so the garage is sourcing one for for me. Cost is probably going to be north of 2 grand.

I wouldn't be so fast on the trigger. You could try contacting BMW directly and try to find out how they feel about this type of failure on one of their high end cars. You might be able to get them to chip in for parts while you take care of the labor or maybe split the cost 50/50. I don't think this is an every day occurrence and it could be a defective part in your particular car.

Glad to hear that your family's fine. Keep us posted. G/L
