PLEASE HELP: engine is making loud ticking sound

There is no basis for this diagnostic. The difference between 10W30 and 0W40 synthetic oils is not great at operating temperatures. In fact BMW also approves 5W30 synthetics. The 5W30 (and the 10W30) oil will give better mileage, not "overwork" the engine. Also, it is not the "weight" of the oil that could cause damaged seals, but the quality of the oil and the change interval. The source of the ticking is not the oil, I am sure.

FWIW, I used to use Mobil 1 full synthetic 5W30 on my car (2009 528xi). Was always a quart low every 5-7k when I changed the oil. Switched to Castrol 0W40 European Formula (available at Walmart). Have not burned a drop of oil since.

I get mine from Wal-Mart as well. Castrol Syntec 5w30 Full Synthetic.

OP issue was a "ticking noise", not oil consumption, Depending on engine health, of course the 40 syn oil will not be consumed as much as the 30 weight oil.
