Got 2 key fobs only (with integrated valet keys) but when asked about spare plastic key during delivery, they didn't seem to think the car came with one. I only found out afterwards (in the manual) there was supposed to be one given to me. Had I known, I would have made them cut me a new one in the deal. I've come to the conclusion (having been to a couple of dealerships) that the salespeople don't really know much else about the other cars in their lineup besides their bread and butter, the 3-series.

i just realized... you said you bought a preowend 535????? wow who the hell gave that up sofast must of been a score for you.. very low miles and a GREAT PRICE...... good luck with the new car....
You got that right. Apparently my 535i was a company car leased for just 2 months but was turned back in when the employee was dismissed. Only had about 400 miles on it and with it being a manual transmission loaded with nearly all the bells and whistles available, the dealership couldn't find any takers. Put it this way, they practically gave the car to me as they had no offers/interest for several months . I hope there was/is nothing wrong with the car. I looked at the carfax report before purchasing and nothing out of the ordinary was stated.

Yes, I keep mine in my wallet too.

It cost me about $46 USD for it. Just take out the key holder from the glove box and insert the key then insert into the key slot on the steering column -- it will start your car.

+1. I seem to recall that it won't open the glovebox though. Is that still the case?

Yes.
Well for cars that do not have the start/stop button it is. The manual states "This key does not fit in the locks of the luggage compartment lid and the glove compartment. This is an advantage when valet parking, for example.".

Again this is only applicable to cars without the start stop button.
