I had four keys supplied with my e46
2 Big keys with full functionality
1 Smaller "valet" key that will not open the trunk or glove compartment. Will not set off alarm
1 "plastic" emergency key. Will set off alarm

best

I had 4 keys with my E46 too as described.
2 remote keys
1 grey "valet" key can't unlock boot, glovebox when main key is first used in the horizontal position.
1 black spare key.

For the E60, the grey "valet" key is no longer used. The black spare key is used instead. Cutting costs I suppose
I have been told by my dealer that the alarm will go off with the black spare key as it doesn't have the normal cpu chip in them like the main remote keys. Appears normal to me, it was the same for the E46.

Okay, I did a quick test.

Locked the car with plastic key, alarm was set. Unlocked the car with the plastic key, alarm turned off (worked normally).

Locked the car with master remote, alarm set. Unlocked the car with plastic key, alarm turned off (worked normally again).

As far as I'm concerned, this behavior is the expected behavior.

Anything else is probably not working as designed.

OK, so then I guess this is a bug and you should contact your dealer.

I'll try mine somewhen this week...

I would respectfully like to know why no one told me I was full of, well, hooey (ok, s&%t? Of course I've got the same plastic key as everyone else, with two remote keys. I must have been thinking of the E39 valet key. Oh well.

I had the same result as Rudy... Car locked with regular remote key, alarm set. Opened driver's door with wallet key...no piercing alarm sound...just the 2 disarm beeps.

It tried it several times. When unlocking the car only 2-3 seconds after locking it, the alarm didn't go off. However, if I waited 10-20 seconds, it would go off.
