Mine has gone off twice in 2 years. The first time I was on a road trip and promptly stoped at a service station to check. Right rear 4 lbs. light. Put air in and proceeded. Apon returning home took it to my dealer and had them check it out. Yes a slow leak. The second time was after driving a long distance at rather high speeds and then stopping rather quickly. FTM went off. Again checked it, and everything was OK.
The system doesn't notice the "normal" slow going on lead.

I noticed that this fall when I went to a gas station and checked
the tire pressures on the summer wheels.
They where about a quater low, but no warnings...

Identical situation happened to me about a week ago but since my dealership is full of highly skilled BMW schooled Service Advisors I got stock reply 76-A ( Have a seat Sir. I'll take care of it right away.)

A few minutes later I was on the road. The S.A. explained to me that some of the F.T.M.s are so sensitive that a 2 pound pressure difference will trigger them. If that is the case then perhaps BMW made them TOO sensitive because a 2 pound difference has got to be not uncommon.

FYI:

Even though we have FTM you should still check your tire pressure regulary. Especially with the low profile tires and even more with the runflats (because they have to be "really" low before you can see any visible difference).

My stock 124's with runflats will drop a few pounds or more every month. The FTM doesn't go off because they lose pressure at the same rate.

Same thing is happening with my BBS winter wheels with non-runflat's. They also will drop a few pounds (but at the same rate).

The system works off the ABS by comparing the speed each wheel rotates at.

If you have a flat, the flat wheel will have a lower radius as air escapes from the tyre, so will have to rotate faster to cover the same distance as the other wheels.

Computer says - Flat tyre !!

I had to get a software upgrade to cure constant false warnings.

If you drive through slush/deep puddle/snow, it is conceivable that one wheel will be able to rotate at a faster speed than the others so the system could register a false flat.

If it becomes a regular problem get the dealer to update the software.

This is not however a tyre pressure check system, if all the tyres lose a similar amount of air over a period, the relative rotation rates will also be similar, so the sytem will not register low pressures.

Contrary to popular belief, tyres are not airtight, all tyres lose pressure over time, thier constrcution is like a tightly woven basket.

Tyre pressures should be checked regularly.

If you just wander around town at 30mph, once a month should be ok.

If you tend to thrash it a bit, check them every week!

I received the FTM warning on the way to work yesterday. I continued on my way and checked the pressure later only to find that all four tires were low!
