Don't forget the petrol was driven round the Top Gear track by 'The Stig' who is a lot better driver (and 45kg/100lbs lighter
) than Clarkson who drove the Diesel. Also, Clarkson hates diesels and would have been glad to come in second behind the petrol.

Think so? If you can prove its a clear cut winner. According to last years Top Gear it wasnt... but if it was and is available in the US I'll get one!

Stig or JC - it really doesn't take much of a driver to mash the pedal into the shag pile and that's where the 545 got its early advantage.....

Also, surely a better test for real world driving would have been fastest laps not from a standing start.

The petrol was quicker off the line and 'lardy' Clarkson didn't have the pace or skill to pass the Stig in the petrol. The only fair test would have been if Stig was timed during a lap in both cars, but maybe petrolhead Clarkson wouldn't have liked the result!

So can we assume that you would only deem a test to be "fair" if the 535 were to win?
The record books will show only that 545 did the business!!
I actually emailed the BBC about this (specifically about the authenticity of the disputed the 3 second gap at the end of the lap) but the buggers never replied. If they ever do I'll post it here!

As for the record books, they also show that the in gear acceleration times are significantly quicker for the 535d. At lot of people would see this as a real advantage over the standing start drag race effect. Over here it only seems to be Saxo and Corsa drivers that are bothered with screeching off the line.
Your signature symbol is interesting. Did you move to the states from Liverpool?

I really need to do some serious thinking about the diesel!
They are fuel efficiant and they have great low torgue,
but so has the new twin-turbo 3.0 litre N54 engine
My 525iA compared to the 530dA is a slow one,
but racing should not be done in the streets.
I only drive about 15 Kkm (10,000 miles) a year and we have a stupid
diesel tax overhere, so...
