I agree with the 530d over a 530i and a 535d over a 545i, but I thought the poll was what would you have if money was no object? not what did you buy and why?

I am the same as you and went diesel for financial reasons, but if I didn't have to worry about the fuel costs and the depreciation on an M5, Alpina B5 touring or RS4 avant I would probably be in one of those.
At 30k miles a year the fuel cost me around ?400 a month in the diesel, in an M5 or an RS4 it would be costing ?800 a month, also the depreciation on the 535d is around ?600 a month, in the M5 it would be around ?1200 a month, so around ?1000 more a month to have the petrol, not worth it for an M5, I would rather buy and Aston for that sort of money!
Well exactly - if money was no object (and it always is unfortunately) then I wouldn't be getting a bmw - much as I love em - or a diesel.

It would have to be an 'exotic' and probably a lambo (but I'd take my time and have some fun choosing).

Money no object - then petrol is clearly ALWAYS going to be better. BMW make some of the best diesels - but they are not as good as the best petrol engined cars.

But ... money is an object ... and my take on this was that ... in terms of value for money the diesel bimmers are better than the 'comparable' petrol ones.

On an international forum, this is not a good poll... In Europe, the situation is surely different.
Its only for fun

My heart says petrol power, but .....

I'd rather have a 530d than a 530i in performance terms

and ....

I'd rather have a 535d than a 540i

and ....

the 550i is just too extreme for a 25K a year mileage in the UK given the cost of fuel.

As to the choice of 550i vs M5 - in the UK the M5 is ?63.5K and the 550i is ?44K

That difference is nearly as much as I paid for my car

.... so not surprisingly - I voted HEAVY OIL
Yes but my point rested on the facts that most of the 550i owners, add quite alot of optionals to the car, some of them get it even full option. Baring in mind that the m5 has some standard stuff that it's optional on the 550i then the gap shrinks even more. Here the 550i is 54k (leasing price) and m5 79k. The only real reason that some might not want or may find the 550i enough is the power and the fact that the m5 is more vulagr. Other than that i don't find the extra 15k or so be so hard to invest, nor do i find the fuel consumption reason to pass it, since the m5 drinks only 5-6 more liters according to bmw in city drive. So it's not that of a big difference. A 535d and an m5 is a big difference on the other hand.

Yes, that's because our american friends have a way better gas price than we europeans. And the fact that BMWNA doesn't import diesels...i wonder why... They don't have diesel stations...yeah right. IMO they encourage the gas consumption by this strategy.

Well - I'm at home awaiting delivery of my 530d (any time now ). So I could vote diesel.
BUT my petrol engined cars sound better.

Head says DERV
Gonna have to stick with petrol
But I reserve the right to change my mind after a few days with my new toy !!

Don't vote till you get your 530d. Even my old 2004 model sounds VERY unlike a diesel and it's also lots of fun

That'll be the 535d over the 545i then?
Think so? If you can prove its a clear cut winner. According to last years Top Gear it wasnt... but if it was and is available in the US I'll get one!

Don't forget the petrol was driven round the Top Gear track by 'The Stig' who is a lot better driver (and 45kg/100lbs lighter ) than Clarkson who drove the Diesel. Also, Clarkson hates diesels and would have been glad to come in second behind the petrol.
