You will need to identify the specific component that is causing that error code, and replace that part. That is the only way to get rid of that error. Some of the most common parts that are known to cause that error are seat mat sensor, BST (Battery Safety Terminal), etc.

I had the same problem and was eligible for the recall but they told me it was just a loose connection to some small wire what not that goes to the battery.

E60 Passenger Restraints System Error
Hello M-Power,
After spending lots of money on components like occupancy mats & belt pre-tnsioners & wasting loads of time chasing this problem, I've got it! You need to undo the in line connectors under both seats & spray both sides of the terminals with WD-40 Specialist Contact Cleaner. You then need to reset error codes with a magic bit of kit called C110 Diagnostic Code Reader. You will cry with relief when this combo of actions works. It's worth buying the C110 because the problem comes back every couple of months, but once used to doing it, it takes 5 minutes & zero tools. No need to take the seats out, just adjust them to full up & full back, this gives you enough access to seat In-lines. Links for kit are:
BMW & Mini C110 Diagnostic Code Reader 97 - 2008 models (now includes SRS airbag reset)
WD-40 Specialist Contact Cleaner : Electronics Cleaners : Maplin Electronics

Logical approach to resolving airbag issues is to diagnose the specific component that is throwing the error. I understand people want to save money and bypass diagnosis. It's similar to going to pharmacist/corner store and saying "give me medicine I have pain in the stomach". :-)
If you ask 10 different people who have had airbag problems, each of them may give you a different procedure/component that caused the problem. With this approach, you end up throwing parts at the car and may not even resolve the problem.

+1. "passenger restraint malfunction" refers to the entire SRS system, not just the "passenger". The driver is also a passenger in this scenario. Any of several components can trigger the fault/lights. Only way to know which component is at fault is to read the error codes and go from there. In my case, the drivers side door control module was faulty. The door control module controls door airbag, windows, mirrors, etc. Everything else worked properly, but no amount of code clearing would keep the SRS fault from reappearing. Replacement of the module solved the issue.
