if you don't have a passenger on the passenger seat, the light will come on.

Alohalc is correct.
If you had a passenger and the light was off you need to take it in for a recall.

If you had a passenger and the light was ON you need to take it in for a recall. Unless they were under the weight limit. (90 pounds, I think)

I have a 2004 525i with the sport package. When my wife rides with me the light goes on and off with a mind of its own sometimes it stays on a while sometimes it goes off for a while and then sometimes it just goes on and off every few seconds. My wife is 5' 6" and weighs 122 lbs. My BMW dealer has tried to fix it and has upgraded the software but i still have the problem. I am working with BMW in New Jersey and they are now telling me this is normal and there is nothing they can do( I have been working with BMW for 2 months on this issue). BMW told me when the light is on, the passenger is not protected by the airbag if there were an accident and suggested if we were not confortable with that she should ride in the back seat. When I travel with my wife we have to drive another one of our cars because she does not feel safe. This is my second BMW and maybe my last, because BMW is not taking this very serious. I feel it is a very serious safety issue. Anyone in the market for a 525i with only 8000 miles?

That's BS. They need to replace the card that controls the airbag. Mine was doing that when it was new and while it could be reset in the software, the tech wasn't satisfied and changed out the card - no problems since (8 mo.). This is not safe and you should not accept.
