Hi All

Got a fault message on the i -Drive , "Particle Filter Failure " it says it is possible to continue driving but bring to BMW for checking. The message is not always there, comes after maybe 20 Minutes in the car. My Car is a 2006 E60 530 D M sport with 70 K Mileage.

Any advice (apert from the change the particle filter .)) )

Thanks

If the error refers to a diesel particle filter and not in to a cabin air filter, you really don't want to go to the dealer and get it changed. It would cost around 1500-2000?.

At first, start reading this, please: https://5series.net/forums/topic/947...e-for-the-dpf/

Try a long high speed run with the car in DS or in 4th gear if manual to keep the revs up.

That might kick start a regeneration.

Shouldn't have problems with this until a much higher mileage, mine has done 70,000 and still shows 55,000 left on the DPF. But they will not regenerate unless at a high temp.

Diesels and short runs are not happy bedfellows.

Worth a try before the brilliant but difficult step in the other thread.

are you doing a lot of short trips/driving around town? This could easily clog up the dpf.

Generally speaking, if your iDrive is complaining that the particle filter has failed, the pressure is too high to start a regen. If you want to try to kick start a regen, you need to make sure
1) the operating temperature of the coolant is more than 75 degrees.
2) you have more than 1/4 of a tank of fuel
3) your speed for the past x (x=5 miles i think) has been more than 60mph.

BUT, make sure you don't drive in a high gear on the motorway.
Diesel cars use a lot of air so with a low gear you actually end up cooling the exhaust temp, which prohibits regens once again..

Also, fyi, the main reasons why a dpf would have failed at this mileage is either: Not enough long journeys/too many short journeys OR the engine doesn't get up to temperature, stopping the regen from from happening in the first place.

If you have a laptop or diag software, you can try to 'force the car to do a regen the next time it's driven.

Yes guys i am doing a lot of short driving to be honest. There is no loss of power or anthing and the car still drives superbly. My local Mechanic has the autologic so will get him to look at it and see how we get on. Fingers crossed that works for me. As i said that fault will only come after maybe 15 minutes of driving. when i stop the car and get out and get back in and restart it goes away and then comes back after 15 minutes . The stuff mentioned in the post about taking out the filter and washing etc looks like major hassle and certainly dont have knowhow & the money (after xmas) to buy a new filter so we live in hope .))

Thanks

Ok Guys

Just brought the car on a 60 Mile spin in DS averageing 100 km to 140 km Per Hour and Rev Count was always at 2000 - 2500 , after about 15 mins on the motorway the message came up again as normal but i kept going for another 40 mins or so druing the trip i checked in on the I-Drive as it still showed the error message, just stopped at my local shops on the way back and when i got into the car and restarted and went in to I-Drive a messsage came up sayiing Particle Filter ok for 50k Miles , does this mean it has regen itselfed ??

Thanks

What did it say before hand? Did you notice a deep grumbling noise coming from the back of the car?

The best thing to do now is just drive around normally for a few days and see the the 15 minute Particle Filter message comes up again.

Check the coolant temps on your engine. It will be interesting to see if your cars running cold.
