Default Overheated engine,car flatbedded.

Driving home today I was aware of the fan working overtime in my 09 535ix.Next the idrive screen told me to drive carefully and don't rev engine or words to that effect.Seconds later I lost most power and screen told me stop car immediately. The car was flatbedded to the closest dealer(that I have never used).
Any ideas what would cause this?Car is working fine and is serviced as per manual.thanks in advance!

Sounds like your water pump took a crap. My X5 did the same thing a couple months ago and my 550's went out last week.

Yes, I had the exact symptoms and it was a failed water pump. I would think its covered for sure, if it's not the warranty you have is probably worthless. The cost here in the US runs from 900 up to 1500 or so. Had some pretty ridiculous quotes. Ended up getting the pump and thermostat from CarQuest and a friend installed it for 200. Parts came to 420.00 but the list for the pump at dealer was 650 and stat was 200. CRAZY!

Water pumps and plastic cooling system parts are maintenance items that are very prone to failure with little or no notice; most qualified BMW mechanics will recommend all parts, including hoses and thermostats, be replaced every 50-60K miles or every 4 years - whichever comes first.

My water pump went two weeks ago with the same exact symptoms. Dealer fixed it since I was in NJ and no where near home. $1700.. '08 535xi.
