The ride quality if fine, I think better than my stock Bridgestone runflats which were 275 18's.

Oops! I should have mentioned that mine were Continental Sport Contact 2's.
No rubbing seen on either the fronts or rears (see my earlier post on the tire sizes).

I also got OEM 166's on my 525d.

I bought them new and fitted the advised 245/35/19 in front, and 275/30/19 in the rear.
No problems at all, no rubbing.
I have no lowering and in my eyes it looks good.

 

I put 166 wheels with 245/40 19s front and 285/35 19s rear on my 07' 550i (US) and I have a REAL problem that may answer your question. This is my personal informed opinion, not fact or anything I heard from a dealer. My car has ARS which is also called dynamic drive. E60s with this option tend to have slightly softer springs than E60s without it. Also, and more importantly, my car came with runflat tires, and BMW's literature confirms that the suspension was designed around the runflats. Again, I'm nearly certain this equates to a softer spring and perhaps even shock/damper setting(s). So here is the problem: The new 166 wheels are lower profile and wider. They are more sensitive to road imperfections and transmit more 'energy' to the chassis. Combine this with a suspension that was looser than usual in the 1st place and you get my car...its fine around town, but on the highway it squirms and moves all over the place. Enough to make passengers concerned. At high speeds 225 kmph + the steering wheel requires full driver attention. It moves quite a bit. For 2008 the U.S. 550 sport now has tighter shocks and springs and comes with non runflats.

This I believe is why BMW won't recommend the 166 wheel for other E60s. However, if your car didn't come with runflats (or if you use them on the 166s) and if your car doesn't have dynamic drive, maybe this "problem" does not apply to you?

Are you sure about the tire's sizes you gave ?
I'm not an expert but looking to recommended values beeing:

- Front 245/35/19 => gives a tire thickness of 85,75mm (35% of 245mm).
- Rear 275/30/19 => gives 82,5mm (30% of 275mm).

Your values gives respectively 98 and 99,75mm !!

Furthermore, the wider the tire, the more sensitive it is to road/highway longitudinal unevenness especially at 225 Km/h.
Here in Belgium with highways of max 3 lanes (most of them has only 2), the right one is often in bad shape (due havy traffic of havy trucks). In this case, maintaining the center of this lane requires some attention

but my experience driving with Dynamic drive equals ZERO because... I don't have this option...
