I drove a Carrera S with the sport exhaust last weekend and it dawned on me, wouldn't it have been easy for BMW to do essentially the same thing? The old exhaust was dual chamber with an electronic (or maybe vaccum) controlled valve that opened the second chamber at a predetermined rpm. Why couldn't we just have a switch to keep the valve open for when we want sport exhaust, and closed up to whatever rpm when we want civil quiet mode?

well that'd cost a few extra $, and i'm sure bmw's bean-counters would've voted against it.

anyway, just go to your mechanic or exhaust shop and tell 'em to put an electronic switch in the cabin, connected to the butterfly valve (or a new solenoid if the current valve won't do) on the exhaust.

Porsche's bean counters made the same calc, and then decided to charge $2300 for the option. They get plenty of buyers. And, oh ya, I guess I was one of them!

you make it sound so easy, is this mod that easy. Do only the 550i and LCi's have sport exhausts?

Heard the sport exhaust on a 550i sport this weekend at my local dealer The car sas at idle and then revved a bit when stationary. Could not drive the car as it was already sold. In my opinion the exhaust is pretty tame.

only the usa 550i sport has the sport exhaust, but we still haven't confirmed exactly what the new sport exhaust is. some have speculated that its simply the same old exhaust on pre-LCI v8 cars, but with the butterfly valve permanently open.

now the porsche sport exhaust is different. its a louder muffler and an electronic switch inside the cabin that controls a valve, so you can open and close it whenever you want, depending on if you want loud or quiet.

and to answer the first part of your question, yes, it is not hard to implement something similar to the porsche sport exhaust where you can control the loudness from the driver's seat. in fact, if you're really gung-ho, a good exhaust shop can fabricate you an "exhaust cut-out" - where you can bypass the muffler alltogher at the press of a button.

In the words of that original Robocop film - "i'll buy that for a dollar!"
