is it ok to use K&N Engine filter ?
Hi all,
I wonder if I can used the K&N performance lifetime filter for my 2010 BMW 535i ? My car still under MFG warranty. Air filter and Cabin filter are under BMW No-cost maintenance service program or not?

I run a dual-cone setup, and the only issue I had as far as maintenance was the stock air filter wasn't replaced. Every other maintenance item was covered.

Using a K&N filter is perfectly ok to use in your car and does not void warranty at all. I had a K&N in my old 530 when it was still under warranty and they never gave me any problems. (they were probably thankful they didn't have to replace my filter for free since I had extended maint as well)

I think there was, however, I think it should be combined with other mods for full effect. With the filter I had the RPI ram air scoop, charcoal filter delete, and an exhaust. On my "new" 550 I plan on doing the filter, scoop, RPI exhaust and a tune to get maximum benefit from the mods.

I had a k&n for mine before going with DCI's and didn't have any issues with the dealer. Performance wise I couldn't tell you since I'm also running a Cobb AP.

Put in the K&N in December and had service last week. Told the BMW SA that I had replaced with K&N, and he said no problem, and put a note to just reset the counter on the car. Said he would pop the cover anyway to check to see if it looks good.
As far as performance..I noticed a very small jump, but not much. Think it helps more with MPG which is ticking up since install. I dont have RPI or tunners. What I did notice..and I might be crazy...but the engine seems louder which I like. Nothing like a V8 but its nice to have a little more engine note in the cab when you get on it.

There is undoubtedly a performance gain due to getting the air into the cylinders with reduced pumping loss through the filter. But it is miniscule compared to the weight reduction effect of lightening the wallet.

LOL, true, but never having to buy another filter helps some with the wallet lightening. I have used K&N on every car for the last 10 years or so. It's nice to get one air filter then never have to worry about replacing it again, just clean it and you're done.
