I went to my dealer, and I managed to get a printout of the "Status report" and it says the following:

Vehicle data status: E060-04-09-550

Target data status: E060-04-09-555

Now they guy was all confused, but he did tell me that his shop (and showed me in fact) only had 15.0 on CD. So he said at the LEAST I have 15.0, because if I had an earlier version he would see all sorts of control mod update messages, and he didn't see any. He also said I can have more than 15.0 (15.1? 15.2?), but that he can't tell because he only has the 15.0 CD. It makes sense, but I wish I knew what I had! It looks like the folks in Germany put the latest software in my car, and the dealer doesn't have the latest-latest.

I would love to know what E060-04-09-550 really is though 15.0, 15.1, 15.2? Which ?

And what is the "Target data status" ?

Wow, your dealer has software on CD? My SA tells me that they aren't allowed to have the software in their possesion because of fear some independent mechanic would steal it, and then take all the free warranty work away from them!! Sounded fishy at the time, now it sounds like so much BS. Anyone else in CA having trouble with upgrades?

Yeah they guy was confused initially, perhaps I was asking very specific things, but then he ended up showing me the CD, the computer they hook up, everything. I just wish I knew what version I had exactly! There MUST be a way to decode that E060-04-09-550. This is all one can get. If someone can tell me what it means I'd be verry happy.

I'm not sure how others are getting their exact versions here, because it seems highly complicated in fact.

The Target Status of E060-04-09-555 translates into version 15.0

Hope this helps

Thanks GotBMW. I also found that out from someone else and now I know I have 15.0. Instead of CD/DVD versions, it would be nice if the report printed out the actual CIP version and so we wouldn't have to correlate. E060-04-09-555 can also maybe be 15.1 or 15.2 for all we know. It depends on what's on that -555 CD/DVD.

I'm still not convinced that the CIP version is contained in those "data status" codes. These cars have so many different versions and codes for so many different modules, etc. The fact that urbo's dealer is so clueless means that I'm not going to put too much weight on what they say.

urbo, you have version 15 if that's what the CD says (and that's the CD they used.)

My dealer isn't using any flavor of 15 yet. According to my SA, they were told to hold off on using 15 because of some bugs. Interestingly, they also were told not to use 14 due to bugs.

My car will be returned to me (most likely tomorrow) with 13.3...

They do correlate. It's always E060-04-09-xxx for the DVD/CD version (not CIP version). Then if you look at the DVD/CD which has the actual CIP software version printed on it, you can correlate between DVD/CD version and CIP version that's inside. All it takes is for one person to do this and it will be the same for everyone else, since xxx DVD/CD versions will always have xx.x CIP versions. They are ditributed to dealers that way. It makes perfect sense. I asked the chief mechanic this once I got past the service advisor, and he was nice enough to walk me to the computer and show my all of this. The dealer/service advisor was clueless, not the chief mechanic.

So the only way to find out your CIP version number is to get the dealer to print out a "Serice report" from CIP, which will show you what your car's E060-04-09-xxx is. Then if you can do two things: 1. Aks the dealer to have the mechanic show you the actual CD/DVD so you can see the CIP version and then make the correlation to tell others, or 2. Ask others who have already made the correlation.

It would be nicer if BMW showed the CIP version in the "Status report" rather than the DVD/CD version...

I don't think my dealer uses CD's for CIP, they download it directly from BMW. I still think there's a way for the dealer to printout the CIP version without having to jump through all the hoops of looking at the status report and/or CD...
