Ok so last November I took my car to dealership for fluid changes/flushes. I know that I had checked the oil level when i got it back..... but I cant seem to remember at what level is was at. Now this afternoon i decided to check the level again, and to my surprise the dipstick marks around 1cm above the max marker. Should I be concerned? Oil level was checked when car had settled for around 2 hours.

Also is it possible for oil colour to be very dark black in colour? Isnt synthetic oil that has been recently replaced have a 'golden' colour to it?

It's not good to have to much oil as it can put stress on oil seals and gaskets. If it has got to much oil in you need to drain some out!

After normal driving, shut off engine and check engine oil level after about a minute or two. This is the correct way to check engine oil level. For example: driver checking oil when refueling, oil change technician checking oil level after starting engine for leak check then turning off engine. Try a "warm" engine oil level check. It should be lower than a "cold" engine oil level.

+ be sure that your car has been parked on an even and level surface or your fluid readings could be erroneous.

And, after doing all the above, wipe the dipstick and re-insert to get an accurate reading. Never just pull it out and look at the accumulated reading.

Check if you can smell fuel in your engine oil. To much oil means high pressure in engine, nothing good. Cheers.

too much oil is potentially more damaging than too little. get car to full running temp, shut off engine and measure after 5 mins or so on a level surface. if it still reads 1cm above max you will need to drain some. any good workshop will have the equipment to suck it out and get the level right. do it very soon.

also all if you have a 525d ( assuming from your handle ) don't worry about the black oil, all diesels do this - even right after an oil change your oil will be black, it's okay.

btw do not all e60's measure oil level through idrive??
