When I take delivery im definately going over that one with my salesman and service department if necessary.

This is unbelievable to me. I know that the E90's were noted for not having a dipstick. When taking delivery of any car, the salesguy should show the new owner the location of the oil dipstick. Its the most crucial service check on any car. I wonder why BMW is relying so much on their computerized systems that they don't acknowledge the existance of the "hidden" dipstick.

The N62TU motors kept the oil dipstick despite having an electronic oil sensor(OZS) for some reason or another.
Now the N52 motors do not have the dipstick and is completely electronic.
BMW did this due to the fact that most people do not check oil lvls regularly, this way they don't have to open the hood to check and get all dirty.
All new BMWs do not have trans fluid dipstick. Used to be because it's lifetime fill but I believe they have reversed it to every 100k miles.
The OZS sensor has been used for awhile, even way back to e38 used to calculate service interval data. It just doesn't measure oil lvl, also how dirty oil is by measuring the capactiance of the oil.
Also wiring a flux capacitor in your BMW WILL void warranty

I had the same exact problem w/ my 550.
The answer is simple. They still don't know.
-first attempt they topped it becasue it was indicating that the oil level was at minimum. Then showed at max.
-Second attempt, they replaced the module. Still not resolved.
-Waiting to go for my third visit to finally get things right?
-I will also be meeting w/ a BMW N.A technician to review my car.

I'm jealous of lots of things about your 2006 550i, but the iDrive dipstick reading is awesome! I hadn't heard about that yet, but on a list of wishes for future models a few months ago, I'm sure I put that on there. Maybe my 545 will get stolen mysteriously and need replacing....

My Ride: 2014 550i M-Sport (on order) 2011 335is 6 speed (current) 2005 545i 6 speed (sold)
Following my upgrade this week to CIP/PROGMAN 21.1, which included crahed/replaced TCU, I too am able to access this "engine oil level monitor" on my 2005 545. Looks like this is a feature that you would get with a software upgrade --- though I have no idea if the replaced TCU played a part.

Since I started driving i have always been told that overfilling oil is as dangerous as driving a car without oil!
