My Ride: On Order as of May 6- 2007 530i Titanium Grey and Grey Leather, with Sport Package, Premium Pkg, Cold Pkg. 2006 Porsche Boxster
Thumbs up

Hello all.. I noticed a puddle of oil under my ride. It was in the garage and then I noticed drips from the plates under the car. It also is VERY clear in color. It does not seem to be engine oil. Could it be transmission oil? The oil level is normal BUT I did notice that the car seemed very sluggish on acceleration today.

Again my thought is transmission oil but what other parts have oil? Again it is clear to the touch.

Thanks!

Regards,

Nick

Was it cool enough that your AC was running? Might have been high humidity (not high temp) causing it to run - in that case it might be condensate (normal) puddling under the car.

Did you detect any odor from the fluid? Most like oil, transmission oil, gasoline, coolant have distinct smells. If none, then it may be water as noted above.

My first thought was that it was the A/C, but I noticed that after a number of hours and all day it did not evaporate. That made me question what it was . Rubbed my finger through the puddle in the garage and the new puddle in the driveway and it was surely oily. No real odor. Just confused as to how clear it was, but it was oil.

There was a similar thread recently and that was transmission fluid.

crawl underneath and check the drain plug for the tranny, I had a small leak that came from the drain plug not being quite tight enough.

'07 530 - are you out of warranty? Even if by a few thousand miles or months I'd look to BMW to correct any leaking under warranty.

We shouldn't expect this sort of mechanical problems (except where damage is evident) in our cars - or for that matter, even run-of-mill basic transportation.

Please follow my thread here on this site......my case is surely not the norm but I had similar leaks. It ended up being a head gasket b/c of loose screws in the connection of the aluminum part of the engine that is connected to the magnesium part of the engine. I had screws that were missing and had a BMW NA rep tell me that these screws could lead to an engine leak via a bad head gasket. Mine is a worst case scenario but also a realistic cause.

I think you may have a crack in your transmission pan (I assume you have an auto). This happened to my 545i around 60,000 miles and was fixed with CPO. If you can, jack your car up and remove the plastic shield. Shine a bright light around the perimeter of the tranny pan and look for a slow leak around the bolt holes.

Good Luck.

I had a problem that sounds like that, and it was a hairline crack in the transmission pan like Gleckie described, but my fluid was not clear. Apparently it is a common problem/failure? Anyway, covered under CPO. Good Luck.
