I can't find the dip stick on my 2006 530i. Is the oil level strictly computer monitored?

Thanks - I hope they know what they are doing. I kind of like checking it once in while to see the color and make sure it's at the proper level.

I agree (i have it in my '04 E60). I'd also like to have some kind of temp meter (as i wrote in another thread) for the same reasons.

Wich are the conditions for the best oil check?
I know that the car has to be on a flat surface and the engine has to be cold...right? Not to starts it to let it warm up.
right?

To check your oil level, drive the car to get the engine up to operating temp, then park the car on a level surface, turn off engine and let is sit for 10 minutes so the oil has time to drain from the engine, then check level. This applies to cars with a dip stick (soon to go the way of milk delivery men! ).

Not sure of the '06 models without dip stick--some cars can check the oil level with the engine running.

Page 195 in the 2006 manual:

"Checking oil level on the 525i/530i

Your vehicle is equipped with an electronic oil level check. The condition for the most accurate indication of the oil level possible is measurement wih the engine at operating temperature, e.g. following an uninterrupted drive of at least 6.2 miles. You can display the oil level on the Control Display while driving or when stopped on a level surface with the engine running."

The manual goes on to instruct that the only time oil is to be added is once the "Oil level at the minimum! Refill with 1 quart engine oil" message appears. Periodically topping off the oil is not posisble until the 1 qt threshold is reached.
