I changed mine at 9000 km. The oil was black and there's only half of what BMW put in according to the iDrive. So I guess that need changing.

If the car doesn't feel better with new oil at 7,500 miles, at least I feel better about the car and not guilty when driving it hard!

Its probably just me but I think the car feels better when revved.

I change mine every 3,000 miles myself. Definitely overkill, but I like to work on the car an it gives me an excuse (in fact, just had to go to the garage and put the car seats in for hte kids this weekend and took the opportunity to jack it up and inspect the install job on my new Dinan muffler). Anyway, even at 3,000 miles the oil is filthy. I changed it at the end of the breakin period (1,200 miles). The filter had some small metal pieces in it, but that's what it's supposed to do. I only have 6.500 miles on the car and have owned it for 13 months.

The maintenance changes your oil every 15k miles. Would it be overkill to change it yourself at 7k miles and than have dealer change it at 15k??

Something i didnt know until recently. Had my oil changed in my 530d and checked it the next morning and it was black, as i am used to petrol engines i was looking for lovely clean oil. I checked it out and my mechanic told me the oil is always a black colour in diesels.
So if anyone dips the car and thinks they need an oil change in a diesel because its black looking. They dont.

No, it was not "half of what BMW put in". It was in the middle of acceptable range. With half of the oil gone severe engine damage would occur.

Anyways the new engine are known to consume oil so I am not surprise that half of the oil is gone, as I needed to topped up the engine oil 8 months into ownership as the iDrive stated that oil is below minimum and they put in around 4 litres of oil in. My car uses around 6.5 litres, you do the math.
Do a search if you don't believe me and I am sure there is threads about new engine consuming oil.

Has anyone noticed that it's all US based people who go for early oil changes. Here in Europe we've been using extended oil change intervals for long time - up to 20,000 miles on some cars now. There doesn't seem to be any penalty associated with the long change cycles - it's always the other parts of the car that fail before the engine these days.
I think in the US you've been conditioned to believe that your engine will die young if you don't change your oil twice as often as the manufacturer (who incidentally makes money from servicing too) asks for, and who is confident enough to offer us a 3 year warranty in the UK on all BMWs.
At the prices BMW UK charge, I'll stick to their recommendations.
