I have my car booked in for a couple of weeks time, i am paying ?165 for my change and I have to to keep the warranty up. Even if the garage didnt do it i would still use the right oil regardless of the cost.

ddalgi525,

I you decide to stick in any old crap then i feel sorry for the potential buyer, better still dont change the oil and let the new owner do it. People should not buy a car like this unless they have the money and are willing to maintain it properly. Just remember Karma, your next car may have been owned by a like mind.

i do my own oil change on my 550, an it stills costs me $75 for oil and filter. so 100 is not a bad deal, but i'd never go to jiffy.

Exactly! I was just going to say something similar. Considering how much parts are $4-5 a bottle and the car needing 8 quarts of oil (V8) and the filter prob costs around $20+

$100 is not bad.

I paid for 1 out of pocket oil change back in 2005 for my 545 and it cost me around $90 at Long Beach BMW. seriously. It might be more now but its not awfully bad.

Not to mention its once ever 12K miles or 1 year unlike Japanese cars, once ever 5K miles. Twice as often.

I'm sure one of the CA guys can provide a specific recommendation. I've had the oil changed on previous BMWs and it's usually between $100-$150 depending whether or not they are running a promotion at the dealership. I've priced doing it myself, and it's frankly not worth the small savings to me. GL

I wouldn't trust Jiffy Lube either with this car.

To many chances for something bad to happen. Could be just that someone doesn't know and it could be malicious.

They employ low wage folks and that's what they get. They don't do a lot of training. It could be that someone puts the wrong oil in your car and they don't even know it. BMW is very specific about what oil is allowed. BMW is probably being a bit anal, but this is what they have tested with and so, I'd stick with that.

Here is the list of approved in the US motor oils:
http://test.resource.bmwusa.com/Pdf_2861cf...b12c1eea2c.arox

Castrol and Mobil and all the others market a lot of different varieties. Those on this list are not easy to find in the local auto parts stores. I wouldn't be surprised if many Jiffy Lube type shops may not even get any of those on the list.

On the darker side of auto repair, then can tell you they changed your oil and done nothing. Or, they can actually find other stuff to "fix" that is phantom or even mess things up on purpose. I'm not intending to say that all auto places are dishonest, but we all know it happens.

Your local AutoZone has Mobil1 0W-40 for $7/quart and you need 7 quarts. Figure $10 for the oil filter and the base cost without labor is $60. So, I'm thinking thinking that something in the $100-$120 range is fair. I'd either (1) do it myself (2) find a local BMW specialist that is trusted or (3) use the dealer. I would suspect that if you look at the local dealers they might have a coupon for money off an oil change.

Valvoline $80, including extra oil. 45 minutes, no appointment. Coupons too. BMW approved oil.
