odd clunking noise

hrmmm...so i guess i will give it a shot again and see if the sunroof is the problem. you guys say opening it disguises the noise?

i have the same noise as well. it comes from behind the idrive. it hs nothing to do with the sunroof though . It is something with my drivers side struts and or sway bar. not sure if your prob is similar to mine but the way you described the noise its an exact match. gonna go to my indy in a couple weeks

i used to have this problem and it turned out to be an exhaust clamps !

My Ride: 95 M3 CAI, chipped, pulleys, Xbrace, doesn't give headaches every time I start up! 04 545i all the goodies INCLUDING HEADACHES!

Check the 2 piece strut brace that attaches from the strut towers to the firewall. This was the problem with my 545i as you describe. You will need to remove the plastic engine cover and possibly the rear cowling that houses the cabin filters to get to the back strut screws unless you can get to them with a socket extension. Easy Fix!

do you get to it from the top of the car or bottom? any pics? i have some freakin' long socket extensions.

btw, it definitely is not the sunroof. i tried open/close yesterday and the noise was constant.

+1 The strut brace that connects at the firewall (top) can loosen. Replace the bolts and torque em down to 27Nm (~19 ft lbs I believe). Well, IF that's the issue of course!
